The Gene Trimble Collection

Gene Trimble, chip collector and researcher extraordinaire, sadly passed away on July 12.

I have been asked by the family to handle the sale of his collection.  In a staggering 50+ years of collecting starting back in 1963, Gene amassed some 29,000 chips covering almost all chip genres.

As requested I am following Gene's written wishes for the disposal.  Some parts of the collection will be donated to the CCA, some will be offered for sale initially to specific individuals, with the balance being offered here at first, and then at the 2018 CCA Convention in Las Vegas.  Ed Hertel will be assisting me with the sale.  Gene's estate really only comprised his collection.  I have a responsibility to the family to raise as much as I can from the sale to cover the medical expenses not covered by his insurance.  The approx 21,000 chips to be offered for sale at this time will comprise around 17,000 listings.

Whilst I have actually had physical possession of the collection since I started storing it for Gene 3 years ago, I won't be back in Las Vegas to collect it until January, so for now I will be offering the chance to reserve chips based on listings I have extracted from a slightly dated version of his Collectors Assistant software.

Please also note that as Gene stored his chips by date of acquisition rather than theme, the preparation of the collection will be a huge task and I don't expect to have anything physically ready to mail out until around March.  There are a large number of lower value items (including some which may not be listed here), which if not 'reserved' by around the end of May, will be offered at the convention in 'bargain bins', so everyone is encouraged to make their 'picks' as early as possible.  Once items are reserved I will remove them from the listings displayed here.

Some of the files are quite large and may take a while to download depending on your internet speed.  Save the files on your machine and view with your PDF reader as this may give different results to viewing in your browser.  Please note the following caveats applying to all the listings and any potential sales.

  • Anyone wishing to reserve a larger value of items may be required to pay a deposit.

  • Better items may have a fixed price.  Everything else is open to offer/negotiation.

  • The Illegals, Fraternals & Military collections will be handled by Ed Hertel.  You can email him by clicking here.

  • All other collections will be handled by me.  You can email me by clicking here.

  • I can't guarantee all the descriptions extracted from the software are correct, and there are a few things that appear in the wrong 'category'.

  • I am aware some items were previously sold by Gene but not removed from his software, so I can't guarantee 100% that everything listed at this time will be available.

  • There do appear to be a few odd duplicate listings (sometimes in different areas of the collection).  It is not yet clear if these are duplicate chips or not (particularly if they use the identical image).

  • A few items do not have images.  I don't know yet if that is because they were never scanned or the scans have been misplaced.

  • In the early days the scans were small and low resolution.  That's all I have to work with.  More recent ones are better.  Larger scans are compressed into square shape by the software.  In most cases they are good enough for identification but if not, email me and I will see if I have the original image.

  • The number appearing directly below the second image (or where a second image would have been) denotes the quantity of chips in that particular listing.  In some cases an image contains chips relating to various listings, or shows more colors/denoms than are actually in the collection.  In others, not all colors described may be shown.  Any second image shown may be the back of a chip or a further chip, thus the quantity number together with the description are important to identify what is being offered.

  • Some items which are obviously part of a complete set (even if listed individually) will only be sold as a set.  I will alert potential buyers if that situation arises.

  • There are some large framed pieces that will be listed here.  It will not be possible to mail any of those, they will have to be collected in person at the Convention.

Some of the files are quite large and may take a while to download depending on your internet speed.  When ordering please quote enough info for me to identify the correct chip - eg file name, page number (although this is a moving target it will give me a clue), Gene's description (first field shown, is in alpha order for each file).
